Named Albert at birth and called ‘Bertie’ by his family, as the second son of King George V, he was never expected to inherit the throne. He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons in 1923 and they became parents to two daughters, Princess Elizabeth (the future Queen) and Princess Margaret. After the death of his father in 1936, Bertie’s elder brother ascended the throne as King Edward VIII but abdicated later that year to marry the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. As heir presumptive to Edward VIII, Albert thereby became the third monarch of the House of Windsor, taking the regnal name George VI.
